Habitat Relations Effect of Winter Flooding on Mass and Gross Energy of Bottomland Hardwood Acorns

چکیده

Decomposition of red oak acorns (Quercus spp.; Section Erythrobalanus) could decrease forage biomass and gross energy (GE) available to wintering ducks from acorns. We estimated changes in mass and GE for 3 species of red oak acorns in flooded and non-flooded bottomland hardwood forests in Mississippi during winter 2009–2010. Mass loss of acorns was 8.1% and reduction in GE 0.03 kcal/g after exposure for 90 days. These small changes in mass and GE of red oak acorns would have minimal effect on carrying capacity of bottomland hardwood forests for ducks. 2012 The Wildlife Society.

Comparing regeneration techniques for afforesting previously farmed bottomland hardwood sites in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, USA

Bottomland hardwood forests are highly productive ecosystems located along the floodplains of rivers and streams throughout the central and eastern United States (Hodges, 1994). These ecosystems provide important functions including hydrologic flux and storage, biological productivity, biogeochemical cycling and storage, decomposition and wildlife habitat (Richardson, 1994). Bottomland hardwood...

Common Denominators of Swainson’s Warbler Breeding Habitat in Bottomland Hardwood Forest in the White River Watershed in Southeastern Arkansas

The most intensively studied breeding population of Limnothlypis swainsonii (Swainson’s Warbler) is in the White River watershed of southeastern Arkansas. However, because vegetation sampling protocols employed at this site have been significantly different from those used elsewhere, it has been difficult for land managers to reconcile datasets across the species’ range in order to construct co...

Habitat Relations Long-Term Patterns of Fruit Production in Five Forest Types of the South Carolina Upper Coastal Plain

Fleshy fruit is a key food resource for many vertebrates and may be particularly important energy source to birds during fall migration and winter. Hence, land managers should know how fruit availability varies among forest types, seasons, and years. We quantified fleshy fruit abundance monthly for 9 years (1995–2003) in 56 0.1-ha plots in 5 forest types of South Carolina’s upper Coastal Plain,...

Does flooding effect the apparent survival and body condition of a ground foraging migrant passerine?

Natural disturbances play a fundamental role in maintaining habitat and landscape heterogeneity; however, these events can also have negative effects on some species. While we know that disturbances can reduce habitat quality for many species, leading to diminished populations and altered community structure, the effect of these events on individuals that continue to occupy affected areas remai...
